Stake sizes and session length: planning a session before you start it

The only number you set yourself
With a random number generator you cannot influence the outcome, but you do set the stake. It is the one dial genuinely in the player's hands, and it determines session length almost entirely.
The arithmetic is plain: budget divided by stake gives the number of spins available even with no hits at all. Spreading 50 euros across 20 cents per spin leaves 250 rounds of runway. At one euro it leaves 50. That is not a detail, it is the frame of the whole session.
That calculation deliberately ignores wins. It describes the worst case and therefore the only figure known in advance. Everything beyond it is chance and does not belong in a plan.
Volatility translates into rounds required
A high-swing game needs more rounds before its distribution even shows itself. Candy Coins by Tom-Horn-Gaming sits at the far end with 94.65 percent RTP, high volatility and a 27,000x maximum win: return is heavily concentrated in rare outcomes.
Candy Stash Deluxe by Zillion-Games sits opposite, at 95.25 percent RTP, medium volatility and a 1,300x ceiling. On the same budget that session feels calmer, not because it is cheaper, but because outcomes cluster more tightly around the middle.
Choosing a high-volatility game while wanting to keep the session length means lowering the stake. Both at once, a big stake and heavy swing, shortens the session twice over.
RTP works more slowly than people assume
Landy-Candy Spins 100 by 1spin4win publishes 97.2 percent RTP, with high volatility and a 6,000x maximum win. Candy Book by Spinoro sits well below at 93.08 percent RTP, medium to high volatility and a 10,000x ceiling.
Four percentage points sound like a lot, yet across a hundred rounds they matter less than a single feature round. RTP describes a long-run average over millions of spins, not an expectation for one evening.
If you do want to compare, compare returns only between games of the same build. Between a cascade game and a classic reel game the same percentage says little about how a session will feel.
Round duration belongs in the plan
Cascade games and bonus rounds consume real time. Candy Heroes by NetGame, at 96.04 percent RTP, medium volatility and a 1,000x maximum win, even uses a shooting game as its feature, which noticeably stretches the round.
Anyone setting a time limit rather than only a money limit should factor that in. Thirty minutes on a fast classic often contain twice as many spins as thirty minutes on a title full of long chains and interludes.
Autoplay belongs in this calculation as well. It changes nothing about the maths, but it raises the number of rounds per minute considerably, and with it the rate at which the budget burns.
Limits are set beforehand, not halfway through
A limit defined after the third losing streak is not a limit. What works is a number fixed before the first spin: an amount, a time window, and the condition under which the session ends regardless of the balance.
Licensed German operators provide tools for exactly that: deposit limits, a panic button, self-exclusion via OASIS. They work because they hold at the moment your own judgement stops being sober.
A break after a fixed number of rounds, regardless of the result, is worth building in too. It interrupts the automatic rhythm that sets in almost by itself after twenty minutes of uniform clicking.
The ceiling does not belong in the plan
Star Candy by Novomatic lists 94 percent RTP, high volatility and a maximum win of 840x. That figure describes the upper edge of the paytable and is entirely unsuited as a session target.
A budget planned around the maximum win is not a budget, it is an expectation. The ceiling is useful for comparing two games and for nothing else.
It is more useful for comparing two games with a similar return: between a 840x and a 27,000x maximum win lies all the information about how that return is distributed.
A plan that fits on one note
Fix the amount, set the stake between one fiftieth and one two-hundredth of it, write down the time window, write down the stopping condition. Nothing more is needed, and less rarely works.
